Do me a favor and compile a list of skills/commands that should not work on AFK players. but for whatever reason, do. I’ll be adding the proper checks to them.

Explain the issue with lookup/diagnose whilst afk to me? These commands do not directly harm the afk player, nor do they breach any currently listed rule (which seems to be what the question here is really about – stopping commands to enforce the game rules rather than stopping commands so people can sulk less.)
Murder (though you will have trouble with ‘hitall’)
ambush/backstab/lunge
inject
steal/swipe
slip?
Shove
Grab/subdue
decrypt_file
cyber
jail?

I imagine SMAUG had support for some sort of ‘ethereal’ flag or w/e. You could always just have AFK turn a person invis/invincible.

Lookup is a way for people to gain sensitive information on a character rather easily if they don’t have an encrypted file. This can and will include character names, organizations, etc. etc.
Pulling a lookup on an AFK character is considered all around to be a dick-move, as the AFK character is likely not around to stop it, RP about it, or anything of the sort. To me, it’s reminiscent of God-Moding, because in the issue of someone like a Firrerreo where their real name (to my understanding) has to be listed in their history, and where that real name has severe IC consequences of use, it’s a bit of a pain in the ass to see that someone wandered into the ship you were AFK on, looked up your file while you were taking a dump, and now they can sit there and have a massive amount of sway over your character’s actions, developments, etc. when they infact had no RP to gain it through.
People can’t always choose where and when to go AFK. Sometimes things come up. You can’t always run into a completely-safe phome to avoid getting lookup’d, and you shouldn’t have to worry about that when you get the scream of "OH GOD YER FADDER CUT ‘IS ‘AND OFF WITH THE ‘ACKSAW" from the backyard.
That being said, if we really want to say that "lookup on AFKers is A-OK", I will not be above running around like a putz look-upping people and being a flaming douche about it until we fix the ruling.

If you make it impossible to shove afk people, going afk needs to automatically force you to block exits. I can easily see people going afk and forgetting they’re blocking, or doing that just to be a dick.

I know someone that did that before, it was a great pain and then claimed that we were breaking the rules for pushing them out of the only exit in a room.
I agree though, if someone goes AFK they shouldn’t be interfered with, and they shouldn’t be allowed to interfere with anything. It should be a two-way thing.

For Modem since no one else said anything, That race has a code enforced true name. Its not the name they chose on creation but they get another command to set there true name and they do not have to list it in their history file. Most people play that race and refuse to give out there code used name just because they dont have too and people accept it because they have not made one and do not know of the true name command,

I wasn’t aware that there was a code-enforced true-name. I’m glad that it doesn’t have to be in the history, however.
The point still stands though that you can gain a lot of a character’s sensitive information through look-up, and I believe that there should be RP surrounding the event of getting that information and using it, that would require the person being look-up’d to actually be there.

There is code support for a true name but it does not appear anywhere else in the mud or in the code. I don’t even think in score. Literally, it prompts you to give your ‘realname’ in chargen and that is the last time anyone sees it.
Thanks for the threats of being an assclown, Modem, but seeing as how ‘lookup’ is the command that inspired this thread I don’t think you have anything to worry about <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt="

I will be all kinds of clown if it means fixing broken rules!
But I was pretty confident that nothing was going to come up that would cause me to be such a clown, regardless of threats or general actions.
I haven’t tried anything on AFKers in a while, aside from shoving the person I was following and grouped with when they thought it was necessary to take an emergency poop during a bombardment.

Another problem with lookup is Stormtrooper A can walk up to AFK Secret Rebel B and do a lookup, see that he’s in the Rebel Alliance. ‘clan Hey there’s a human named Bob he’s a rebel lol’. Or other similar situations.

While it could lead to abuse, I’d like to bring back up the idea that somebody mentioned earlier: AFK players being invis.
I, for one, have been completely legally wtfpwnt when I went UN-afk.
No rules were broken while I was AFK; this situation was right after the new AFK was put in, and it’s also the reason that the "teach accept" was put in.
While I was AFK, a group of bounty hunters went up to my character and tried to teach him backstab; when the skill failed because I already had it, they blocked the exits and waited. When I went un-AFK, they jumped me and permed me.
Unfortunately, ambushing a player when they go un-AFK–while a completely dick move–isn’t against the rules, has never been against the rules and (unfortunately, again) doesn’t show any sign of being against these future rules concerning dick moves on AFK players.
I may be speaking from personal history, but something needs to be added (code-wise, or simply rule-wise) about actions upon un-AFK.
ALTERNATIVELY, simply give us back the ability to look without dropping AFK.
