Why does it suck? Please to be bringing back the old one while you fix the current one that is broken. This is a newbie school, not a playground to test out how broken you can make an area. I mean, unless you don’t want newbies. That’s cool too.

      Specific examples:
      1. You have to read room descriptions that tell you to look for the highlighted word to find the exit and there are multiple highlighted words in the description. This is a "newbie" school. Not advanced LOTJ mudding. Finding hidden passages is unnecessary for a newbie to learn. Especially as the first room in the "newbie" school.
      2. "Move in this direction" rooms are useless. This doesn’t make the newbie zone unplayable, but a bit retarded.
      3. The flight training room doesn’t work and even says in the room description that it doesn’t work. Why don’t you just take this room out or replace it with a step by step guide for getting to a different planet. Including the planets command, an overview of navstat, etc.
      4. You need to speak basic in order to get past a door to get to the teacher that teaches you basic. This is a problem.
      5. You can change the locks on the coded doors with setcode. Failing fixing that, you could make the door unnecessary to open. Make it open a door that leads you to a room that tells you about setcode or something.

Oh snap I just ice burned whoever made that shit. Woop woop.

Yeah, does seem pretty stupid that the Newbie School is that broken. I like the old one better, the one where you had to give the ration to the sick guy?

Thanks for checking in, old newbie school appreciation buddy!

If the newbie academy isn’t good, that needs to get fixed asap.

I won’t have much time between now and finals, but I should be able to give it an overhaul in a week or two.

      Ideas? Suggestions?

Totally! I can write the room descs if you want. It should just be simple. The idea whoever had for the current one is a GOOD IDEA, but it’s just currently unplayable. So once it’s fixed it’s cool to be there but for now we need a quick and dirty newbie school that just tells you the basics.

Want me to post the room descs here or…?

I should add, unplayable by newbies. I was able to complete it in under 15 minutes as a Jawa who couldn’t speak basic, BUT – a normal newbie shouldn’t be expected to do that or even be able to.

Okay, I’m going to address each of your points individually:
      1. Newbie school isn’t there just to teach you commands and ‘how-to’s, but also to prepare you to explore and discover on your own; the purpose of the multiple highlighted words is most likely to encourage exploration and self-sufficiency. I have found several areas in the actual game where knowing about hidden passages IS a good thing.
      2. The "Move in this direction" rooms serve one purpose: to allow new mud players (entirely new, not just new to lotj) to familiarize themselves with mud movement.
      3. True, the flight training room doesn’t work, and I do agree that this should be fixed (I’m not volunteering either!); you’re idea for the guide for planet-travel is a good one.
      4. I have made several characters of several races and you DO NOT need to speak basic to pass by the teacher. I got by with my Geonosian (who cannot speak basic), and several others who did not speak basic until a while after reaching the actual game.
      5. I wasn’t aware that the door codes could be changed with setcode, that is a potential problem which should be altered.

Personally, I like the new Newbie School. At first I wasn’t very fond of it, but after weighing the pros and cons, I’ve found that the new School has much more ups than it has downs. (e.g. Teaching players about the IC/OOC split, good and bad descriptions, how the Force works, etc.)

No, you fail. You’re a moron – stop posting.

Newbie school is for newbies. It is not meant to FORCE YOU to use advanced commands and FORCE YOU to think. It is meant to teach you the basics. From there, you learn by playing and reading help files. There should be just enough information in there to give you an idea of basic movement, flight and probably some sort of information about how to start making money. NOTHING else. If you want an advanced mudding school then make a stormtrooper academy or something. That is NOT the point of newbie school.

EVEN if we followed your logic (assuming your logic is "teach them everything they will need to know to be successful in the game") then the newbie school would still be woefully lacking in detail. I mean shit, you’d better learn to PVP in there too, AMIRITE? Idiot. Also, your second point is completely retarded:

[quote:ov6feunf]2. The "Move in this direction" rooms serve one purpose: to allow new mud players (entirely new, not just new to lotj) to familiarize themselves with mud movement.[/quote:ov6feunf]

I’m assuming you’re trying to defend having those rooms in there? That sounds really smart. Did you even think any of this out before you decided to start typing? You shouldn’t have an advanced and beginning school melded together.

As for not being able to speak basic and getting through it, I KNOW IT’S POSSIBLE. If you read the thread you’d know I got through it on my Jawa. I’m letting you all know that my roommate (not a terribly stupid guy) got to that part and just quit because it wasn’t worth his time anymore. If a newbie sees gibberish on the screen and there’s no way to read that without getting through, it’s going to irritate the hell out of anyone. It even irritated me because I had assumed they took the language guy out altogether. Either make the mob speak every language or move the language teacher in the first three rooms of the school.

The only thing you even listed as a pro to the new school is:

[quote:ov6feunf]Personally, I like the new Newbie School. At first I wasn’t very fond of it, but after weighing the pros and cons, I’ve found that the new School has much more ups than it has downs. (e.g. Teaching players about the IC/OOC split, good and bad descriptions, how the Force works, etc.)[/quote:ov6feunf]

All of those things that you like about the new newbie school can be done by adding a room or two to the old newbie school. If you like nothing else … oh god I’m so angry with you right now. WHY DO YOU WANT TO KEEP THE NEW SCHOOL? What the fuck sense does that make. You’re basically stating that it’s okay to have newbies log on and the first area they see is super difficult. I would love to see the thought process of you "weighing" pros and cons. Seriously. It’s like you’re a 12 year old trying desperately to sound intelligent.

In closing, sure, we could use a new school. That’d be pretty badass. Unfortunately we don’t have one, so put the old one back while this new badass one is being made. I’m sure it’ll rock when it’s done! Stop putting broken things in the game, thanks in advance!

PS: I just wanted to be overly mean – everything I posted in a demeaning manner was sarcasm. I really love you! <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –> But seriously, if you don’t care enough about your post to think it through, then just say so. Don’t act like you took out a fucking notebook and &quot;carefully weighed the pros and cons&quot;. That just makes you a stupid liar and stupid liars don’t help anything.

I concur 100%. The newbie school is obviously designed by people who haven’t been newbies on the mud in years. Which isn’t to say it doesn’t work, but, the points illustrated here are extremely valid.

Jec, you may feel free to crucify yourself.

When I joined LotJ, I didn’t know how to say something, how to move or how to look. Yes, it was helpful at the time, it will continue to be.

There are way too many unique LotJ features to go over ALL of them in the academy.

The academy is designed to give new players a rudimentary understanding of how the MUD works and the more important features. For everything else, there is the TIP system.

Here’s a list of all the things the current academy talks about.

What can be added? What can be removed?

      basic movement
      description/history
      textcolor/tones
      Memorycheck/greet/dub
      Approach
      shops
      Locked doors (keypad/keys)
      Turbolifts
      Combat/healing
      Flying
      Comlinks
      Researching
      Rules
      Classes
      The Force
      RPC
      IC/OOC

      Put in a quiz thingie!

A clown mysteriously asks you ‘What do you do if you feel that you have been permed unfairly?’

A clown winks, suggesting. ‘A! Do you rant on OOC channels?’ (the &quot;rant on OOC channels&quot; would be different color than the rest of the sentence, as it is the &quot;key line&quot;)

A clown quietly says ‘Or perhaps B, log on an alt to find your killer and have your revenge..’

A clown brightly exclaims ‘Or C, which is contact the RPC via rpc &lt;message&gt; and present your case!’

      You say ‘contact the rpc’

A clown happily exclaims ‘THAT IS ABSOLUTELY CORRECT! The RPC handles player restores and various issues, do not hesitate to get in touch with them if you feel that something wrong has happened!’

      IF YOU ANSWERED WRONGLY:

      A clown sniffs quite sadly, shaking his head. &quot;Oh no, no and no. The correct answer would have been C. The RPC handles player restores and various issues, do not hesitate to get in touch with them if you feel that something wrong has happened.&quot;

      A clown winks again, &quot;However you may pass on to the next room.&quot;

*HERE THE PLAYER TRAVELS TO THE NEXT ROOM WHERE THIS ALL WILL REPEAT ITSELF, ANOTHER QUESTION THOUGH*

As a newbie, I’ll put in my two cents about the school, seeing newbies is the point of discussion.

First off, I’ve never played a friggen MUD like this before, aside from Tradewars, so movement was known to me.. but, hell last time I played that was 5 years ago, so my experience is neglectable.

Anyway, I couldn’t figure out how to use the damn guide at first to be honest.
I was expected to ‘say ready’ but, ashamed as I am to admit it, I couldn’t even figure that out -.-; But that might just be added to my own stupidity.

The movement room which, IMO, is a bit redundant but perhaps usefull to those entirely clueless as what to do (though, how the hell did they get there in the first place then?).

Finding the hidden passage, the sick ewok (I think), made me think there was a quest, it was obvious. I still have the cyringe too, but backtracking wasn’t possible. That’s because there is a moment where the guide tells you to go south, or east, whatever, and that direction isn’t listed. When you *do* decide to go back, you wont be able to continue untill an Imm purges your Guide and gives you a new one. Same goe’s for the big fat whatchamacallit that you need to feed the lizard to, go back after passing him, and you wont be able to get him out of the way again.

The flight school would’ve been nice.. I still cant figure out properly how to land, though the guide on the wiki (I believe a copy is also in the MUD) is really helpfull, aside from it forgetting to mention you need to have less then 100 speed to be able to enter orbit, or you’ll overshoot the planet.

The helpfiles were helpfull, the explenation about the bio too, though its displayed as if the bio and history are two different things, yet I’m then told by an Imm that the history is the bio.. :s

Yarr.. I think thats my two cents

For the record the sick ewok is a quest and you can backtrack the guid will follow you ignore him and keep going you can approach the doc and give him the syringe he gives you 500 medical exp and transes you back to the shop you bought the syringe and he transes the guide with you.
