TLS

LOTJ supports TLS (secure connection) for those who are privacy-minded.
This is the same encryption technology that keeps websites secure -- it stops
your ISP, hotel network, or anyone between you and the game from reading your
traffic. More practically: your password is no longer sent in cleartext every
time you log in, which has always been the quiet elephant in the room with
plain telnet.

Connect securely on port 5676. These connections persist across copyovers just
like regular ones.

CLIENT SUPPORT
--------------
Mudlet - Yes. Tick the Secure checkbox in your connection profile and set
the port to 5676. You may see a certificate prompt on first
connect -- accept it and proceed.
TinTin++ - Yes. TLS is built in. Use: #session <host> 5676 ssl
Blightmud - Yes, natively. Terminal client for Linux/Mac (WSL on Windows).
MUSHclient - Yes, by downloading a patched version provided by Nield that
supports TLS. The patch is still under review by MUSHClient's
developers, but you can download an early release preview here:
https://github.com/NieldSWND/mushclient-tls/releases
CMUD/zMUD - No. Both are retired and neither ever gained TLS support.

If your client isn't listed, look for a Secure, SSL, or TLS option in its
connection dialog. No such option usually means no support.

DO I HAVE TO SWITCH?
--------------------
No. The standard port is unchanged and nothing about your existing setup is
affected. TLS is opt-in. If you play from home on a network you trust, plain
telnet is fine. If you connect from work, a university, a coffee shop, or
anywhere you don't control the pipe, the secure port is worth using.

We've also added support for MNES (Mud New Environment Standard), which allows
proxies and middleboxes to correctly pass through client information like your
real IP address. This isn't actively used for anything player-facing yet, but
the groundwork is in place.
