So it suddenly occurred to me. Why do we have these? Study and research have an actiondesc associated with them that allows you to see that the person you’re talking to is doing something. Buildship ought to have one too, ‘$n is working on <ship>’ or whatever. I don’t remember if armor crafting has one or not but it also should.
Construction pads in particular are notoriously spammy, but libraries can get obnoxious too. All four of these things are, ICly, a continuous action. You don’t begin researching, read a few lines, stand up, sit back down, read a couple more, etc. An actiondesc tells everyone else in the room everything we need to know. Do we [i:1mqhf2l0]all[/i:1mqhf2l0] really need to be spammed with every single attempt you make?

<long-winded rant about the pros and cons of this>
Maybe there could be a config to turn the attempts off? Especially for buildship, this would be amazing. People make gags and what-have you, and there’s supposed to be the point that there’s a lot going on, but Kora has a really good point that it’s all a continuous action. It would be… awesome if something like this could be implemented.

I’d be all for that."Locksharp":y9teuvs3 wrote:People make gags and what-have you, and there’s supposed to be the point that there’s a lot going on…[/quote:y9teuvs3]
..In a library? There’s a lot of noise on a construction pad, I’ll give you that one. I don’t think it’s that there’s SUPPOSED to be a lot of spam to simulate a lot going on, I think it’s that players use "there’s a lot going on" as an IC version of "I lost what you said in all this god awful spam."

Yeah, libraries should not be spammy. I hate buildship spam, absolutely detest it, but the degree to which it disrupts RP is almost immersive.

When my buildship script actually worked, it filtered out the buildship spam. Now? *grumble…*

Buildship spam "makes sense" in that you are in a construction yard where they are building spaceships. It is supposed to be loud and distracting.
Research I guess you could make that point but I’ve never seen so many people researching at once that I thought "wow, this is annoying"
Datachip Libraries you could probably make a good case for study not echoing to rooms, but I hate datachip libraries and they are all centered in ship garages anyway (because of the save_eq flag) so it blends. Maybe studying in a garage should have a negative impact because of the noise <!– s:twisted: –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_twisted.gif" alt="" title="Twisted Evil" /><!– s:twisted: –>

I sort of reject the idea that the spam of a construction yard is a good thing because it’s supposed to be noisy there. The spammy proximity alerts from orbiting a busy planet certainly simulate the obnoxious alarms that should be going off on the bridge, but we give players the option to filter them out [b:rurnwej2]because[/b:rurnwej2] they’re obnoxious. We remove them so that RPing on the bridge of a ship isn’t a migraine-inducing venture. Building ships is boring enough as it is, especially if you have something that needs to be built soon and you aren’t ready to just walk away and bot it. I don’t see why we should continue to cripple construction yard RP/people trying to discuss ship modifications/etc. It’s the argument we keep having about picking between making the game realistic or enjoyable. It’s not immersive, it’s just annoying. But I’m clearly in the minority of people who think they should go <!– s:P –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt="" title="Razz" /><!– s:P –>
In response to Walldo’s comment about research, I’ve been in situations a few times where I’ve found it really annoying, but that’s because I generally try to RP with anybody else who might be in the library while we both research instead of just semi-botting it.
As for studying, there are people who bring objects/datachips into public meeting places like the square on Arkania looking for company while they learn whatever. It’s not debilitating to RP, we all have the ability to scroll up, but it’s annoying and shouldn’t have to be… and what are you supposed to say? "Excuse me sir, can you stop studying so loud? We’re trying to have a conversation."
