      Computer Virus (Slicer Skill)

      [b:33d70tre]Command(s):[/b:33d70tre]
      Codevirus (virus type)
      uploadvirus (terminal)

      [b:33d70tre]Requires:[/b:33d70tre]
      Datapad
Datapad with virus stored (uploadvirus requirement)

Creating a virus takes a LONG time, and there is no success that a virus will work effectively, adept viruses will be faster working than non-adept, but the eventual outcome is the same. A virus can be uploaded to any terminal using the UPLOADVIRUS command, the types of virus that can be created are below:

[b:33d70tre]Polymorph:[/b:33d70tre] will attempt to lower the size of a terminal’s database to what is already stored on the terminal, this could effect mail terminals and prevent anyone else from posting any more items due to lack of database space

[b:33d70tre] Disassembly:[/b:33d70tre] Will attempt to remove any firewall and / or anti-virus software from a terminal (unless the firewall stops it obviously, but firewalls are explained below)

[b:33d70tre] Stealth:[/b:33d70tre] Will attempt to hide itself inside the terminal and grant remote access to a slicer via datapad, this can be used to tap into private databases and manifests or other information.

[b:33d70tre]Directory[/b:33d70tre]: Will attempt to delete any and all information on the target terminal such as bank accounts. This is a potentially devistating virus if planted successfully and not countered quickly.

      [b:33d70tre]NOTE[/b:33d70tre]
The theory for the core coding required for all this virus / firewall / antivirus stuff is going to be explained in my firewall idea below.

      Firewall (Slicer Skill)

      [b:33d70tre]Command(s):[/b:33d70tre]
      Createfirewall
      Uploadfirewall (terminal)

      [b:33d70tre]Requires:[/b:33d70tre]
      Datapad

This will upload a firewall to the terminal which will hopefully destroy any virus attempts on that specific terminal.

The theory behind this skill in relation to codevirus is explained below:

[b:33d70tre]Ben creates a virus in-game on tuesday and attempts to upload it to a terminal.

The firewall installed on the terminal was created and uploaded by John in-game on the monday, the virus has a small chance of success because it has only been one day since the firewall installation.

Ben then uploads the virus to another terminal, which has a firewall that was installed 3 weeks prior. This has a very good chance of success because the firewall is so outdated.[/b:33d70tre]

Firewalls have a random life expectancy, it is completely random that the firewall will provide protection for three days, two weeks, who knows? The firewall may still have a chance of countering the virus but the longer the firewall is installed without being updated the less chance it has of combatting a recent virus.

Code-wise, numeric values according to the date the virus / firewall was created can be employed, for example, Ben created the virus on the date 03-08-2000 IRL, so the MUD documents it’s value as 03082000. John’s firewall was created on 02-08-2000, so the MUD assigns it as 02082000, the virus numeric value is higher, so normally it has a better chance of breaking through the firewall, but firewalls are also assigned a “life expectancy” randomly by the MUD (to stop slicers from simply infecting all terminals every morning they log on), in this case, John’s firewall has a five day life, which immediately means the virus has less chance of working. If Ben uploads his virus 5 days later, it has more of a chance of infecting the terminal.

Also, to stop people from constantly uploading the same virus to try and beat the firewall, not only is the virus wasted after it’s use, but a terminal can only be infected by the same person once every few days or so (UNLESS the virus is a successful Dissasembly virus, in which case the slicer can then infect the terminal with ONE more virus to achieve their overall goal), toggle that time as you want, i’m not 100% sure how it will work.

      Anti-Virus

      [b:33d70tre]Command(s)[/b:33d70tre]
      Createantivirus
      Uploadantivirus (target)

      [b:33d70tre] Requirements:[/b:33d70tre]
      Datapad

So your firewall sucked did it? got a virus rampaging through your database screwing thing’s up? get someone to create an antivirus and upload it to your terminal. This works on the same numeric basis as a virus / firewall themselves, the newer the Antivirus the more chance you have of countering the virus, the only difference is that you can upload any amount of Antivirus software and eventually kill off the virus. Adept anti-virus software will remain on the terminal and “scan” the terminal at a time set by the terminal’s user, possibly eliminating any infecting virus on the terminal. Non-adept anti-virus software will try and remove a virus and will then be removed from the system, not offering the constant protection of adept anti-virus software.

      [b:33d70tre]FINAL NOTE[/b:33d70tre]

There is massive oppertunity here, code can be added to let slicers “link” one terminal to another, this will enable a company to advertise antivirus and firewall services, once your terminal is linked to the companies terminal, they can update the anti-virus and firewall software on the master terminal owned by the company, which will filter to every linked terminal and auto-update those terminals too (basically, it’s like a real life package like AVG, Norton, Mcafee etc), offering this service would also require code to allow direct-debit style billing of peoples accounts, and it will be up to the company to view records of who has paid subscription, and terminate any updates to a person’s terminal who has not paid the subscription. This idea would spawn new companies and services, and boost sales in shops of pre-made firewall and anti-virus coded datapads which anyone can install on their terminal themselves (but will not give the auto-protection of paying a subscription to the anti-virus and firewall software company for that little extra and up-to-date protection). The virus types can obviously be modified in name and effect, i’m simply offering suggestions.

      [b:33d70tre]FINAL FINAL NOTE[/b:33d70tre]

Make sure you secure your companies master terminal, it would be a shame if someone got into the room and installed a virus that then filters to all your customers terminals, man, that would piss a lot of your customers off <!– s:P –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!– s:P –>

I love it. More Slicer Skills FTW!

      This is great stuff.

We could relate a ton of different aspects into the server system. Clan empowerments, banklogs, inductionlogs, note terminals…
