Just like any five year old kid come Christmas, you’re confusing needs and wants, Skiia. That player WANTS to have levels to start roleplaying (perhaps they want to play an elite slicer, or a hardened soldier–or any other character concept that’s difficult to pull off without adequate levels); they don’t NEED levels (or skills) to start roleplaying–just to be that much more legitimate at their chosen character concept.
Take, for example, child characters: they can roleplay fine without levels.

RJ, why do you bother?
The fact remains that most people aren’t comfortable putting themselves into some situations without having the right skills behind them. Lots of skills do serve RP purposes, and it’s handy to have them. Making it a long, slow process to get those skills does nothing to improve the quality of the RP or PK on the MUD, so why is it like that?
Also, remember that there will no longer be datachips on the MUD, so the times for leveling could be even longer and slower.

"Hi, who are you?"
"Oh, I’m Doctor Tomorrow. How can I help you?"
"Well actually I neede-"
"Woah, I’m just a doctor in name. I actually need to sit here and spam a whole bunch and bot a lot in order for me to actually do anything useful. Otherwise I’m really just a hot bag of air who’s trying to sound cool. Look me up in four or five days."
"Uh… alright."

It’s an example. I used it not because it’s the BEST example, but because it’s the EASIEST. There have been far more child chars in the mud’s history than any other levels-optional archetype I could think of (trainee <class here> are not "level optional").
There are many other character archetypes that don’t require levels. Marazzo Bartender? Galactic Tourguide (the kind that doesn’t sun people)? Librarian? Really, the options are just as endless as the number of archetypes that actually REQUIRE levels (e.g. Doctor).

Not all engineers are mindless drones. To RP an engineer, you need engineering skills. To get engineering skills, you need to spent four months of your life in a library, in the case of Mush as I do it; research makex, UP, ENTER, wait, UP, ENTER, wait. Lather, rinse and repeat. You can trigger it or whatever, but it still takes just as long really.

ever researched as a leader main? how about doing that with a partner? yeah, it’s far from useless. granted I wish you could put it into a que, like research combat all, and it would automatically have you move from one to the next, but it is a useful for both RP AND Leveling, if you know how to use it.

RJ makes a valuable point. You don’t -need- levels to start RPing, infact, I sold armor without having the skill in the ready. Research is there for the realism. Do you go up to some guy someplace IRL and say "Prac makecontainer"? No you don’t. You would goto a library and research the actual techniques to make a container.
The only place I see "prac" being anywhere useful, is for combat skills. How many soldiers do you know that sit and hit the books to learn how to shoot a gun? Not many. However, with that said, by implementing prac for combat skills. You get -more- combat mains, and -less- anything else. Because they’d get their skills faster, and go out and kill someone or something, or even you.
So there’s really no point in arguing. Anna said that it’s not going to change. They might discuss it, but I seriously doubt they will change it.

Research queues are relatively easy to handle client-side with a series of simple triggers, variables, whatever.

Here’s a quick and easy little example on how to cut down on your active research time if you use MUSHclient (if you’re familiar with how to use scripts. if anyone isn’t and is interested, I’ll just make this a small plugin which is easier to use).
Write a small script, and include something like this (this one is vbScript):
[code:31tbomdn]
sub onResearch(name, line, wildcards)
dim nextResearch
nextResearch = wildcards(1)
world.DeleteTrigger "researchYes"
world.DeleteTrigger "researchNo"
world.AddTrigger "researchYes", "You finish your studies and feel much more skilled.", "research " & nextResearch, 1, 14, 0, "", ""
world.AddTrigger "researchNo", "You study for hours on end, but fail to gather any knowledge.", "research " & nextResearch, 1, 14, 0, "", ""
end sub
[/code:31tbomdn]Now, just have an alias call the routine. My alias is just simply "research *". This will make it so that you only have to type research once for a single skill. I do this and simply preoccupy myself in another window while it does its thing.

That exact functionality can be done with a simple trigger linking "!" to the success/fail outputs of research, for those who don’t use MUSH. Hell, the "!" mechanism even works in GMud.

Not if you have a save timer or check your prac list or look around the room or talk on your comlink or… the list can go on. Basically, if you do anything other than research while you research, it’ll mess up using "!" which really just makes researching even MORE of a pain than it already is.

The ‘!’ will work if you’re just using it when a message comes through saying ‘You don’t know how to fry pancakes.’ and then you use the command again and it works.
But yeah. As Kora said. It’s fine until you are doing other things as well.

I would like for someone to explain how exactly research helps RP? It may be "Realistic" in your heads but it does nothing to increase rp or gameplay value.
