Hi folks. Sorry if I’m posting this on the wrong boards. I’ve just found your MUD and think it’s incredible. I’m having a ton of fun but have a few questions that I couldn’t find answers to on any of the help files. If anyone out there has a second or two to spare to help out a new guy, I’d appreciate it.

On my prompt I have an indicator for OOC, followed by vertical bars (OOC: |||||||). Can anyone tell me what this meter is for?

I’ve gotten a few of my classes to level 3 and notice on the LEVEL screen it shows the maximum level I can achieve in the given class. Is there any way to increase the maximum level through gameplay? And what determines the maximum levels? I noticed that races seem to have modifiers. Do these modify the use of the skills listed under that class or do they actually increase the maximum level itself? Do my starting attributes affect the maximum level at all?

Also, does increasing my level affect my skill use? For example… if beg is a level 1 smuggling ability, and I’ve increased it to 100%… will increasing my overall smuggling level from, say, 6 to 7 increase my begging ability even though the skill is already at 100%?

      Is it possible to change one’s hair color after character creation? I picked a weird color and am regretting it <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

What, if any, advantages does one gain from using skills listed under the class that you chose at character creation? If I chose combat, will my level 5 combatant shoot better than an engineer whose combat level is also 5? What exactly do you benefit from selecting a class? Does it allow you to gain more levels in your chosen class?

Is there a way to clear the queue of commands you’ve entered? I’ve been trying to increasing my begging skill by… well, begging over and over. And it seems like I can’t use other commands such as look until all of the begging attempts have gone through.

Lastly, is there a website where one can find the sound files that the mud looks like it’s attempting to play at various times?

Think that’s about it for now. Thanks in advance for any help or answers you can provide, I appreciate it. Any other tips for a newbie would also be appreciated, such as where should I go to &quot;hunt&quot; and practice my weapon skills, or the general location of shops that sell newbie gear and weapons.

      Have a nice weekend.

That is sort of an anti-spam protection tool. As you talk on OOC, the bar will decrease. It regenerates over time but if you input too many lines in a short amount of time you are effectively locked out of the channel for five minutes or so until it reset.

Maximum levels for classes can be obtained through training the different stats (see below) and getting cybernetic enhancements on your character. All stats affect different classes so training them will raise your maxes in different classes (refer to individual stat help files for more information.)

[quote:1vq55tm1]Is it possible to change one’s hair color after character creation? I picked a weird color and am regretting it[/quote:1vq55tm1]

There is in-game hair dye for sale on various planets

[quote:1vq55tm1]What exactly do you benefit from selecting a class? Does it allow you to gain more levels in your chosen class?[/quote:1vq55tm1]

Selecting a class as your main gives you a healthy level bonus to that class obviously, but different ‘mains’ affect other level max’s beyond the racial modifiers.

      No.

LotJ does not actively support the sound pack; it’s built into the code base. I’m not sure if the URL in help sound works, but if not try gooogling ‘SWR mud sound pack’ and it shouldn’t be too hard to find.

Hope this helps, and welcome to LotJ!

Thanks for the reply Walldo, I appreciate the input. After playing for a few more hours and exploring as much as possible, I have a few more questions if someone wouldn’t mind taking the time.

I found a trainer and attempted to increase one of my stats. It cost me 2000k to train, but it said after hours of training (something like that), it was unsuccessful. Did I do something wrong or is that just a risk you take when attempting to increase a stat? On that note, is there a way I can tell what my race’s (Human) maximum stats are?

My score sheet says I can learn 1 additional language. I hesitated in the &quot;academy&quot; portion of the game, not knowing which to choose. Now that I’m out, I can’t find a place to learn an additional language. Is there a certain location I must find?

My character is currently on Lorrd. I can’t find a weapons shop anywhere that sells cheap vibroblades or blasters. Should I be on a different planet?

In terms of using account points to purchase a race at character generation, I’ve noticed it says #/#, where the first is the points and the second is the deposit. How exactly does the deposit work? Is it a deposit of points? And if so, what’s the difference between depositing the points and outright spending of points? Not that I anticipate amassing any great store of points any time soon….

My character learned search. It’s currently at 0%. How does the skill work? I typed search but I get &quot;Huh?&quot; as a response and can’t figure out any other command to make it work. Any help? Does it need to be higher than 0%?

Last, is there a designated newbie &quot;hunting&quot; area? A place where new characters normally go to practice their combat skills other than the training droids… who I can’t seem to do more than slightly dent?

Thanks again. I’m very excited about the game and look forward to hanging around for a long while to come.

Just to clarify it is 2,000 credits not 200,000 to train a stat. You are not guaranteed the stat roll, it’s just luck of a draw that it fails.

Different Universities have language tutors. languages can also be learned with the research command in any library room (hail library).

A large portion of LotJ’s economy, especially the weapon and armor market, is player-driven. Your best bet is to ask over commnet 0 (the talk channel) where to find low-priced equipment for those ‘fresh from the academy’ (general slang term for a newbie).

The first #, you just pay that straight up. The second number is subtracted to your account and is returned upon the character’s death; it’s possible to lose your deposit by acting outside your race’s general roleplay or just being a big ass hat.

In LotJ game mechanics there is a difference between getting the level needed for a skill and actually learning it. In this case, your character does not actually know ‘search’ since it is at 0%. Most skills can be research’d in a library; the exceptions are force, smuggling, and bounty hunting skills. Search is a smuggler skill and can be taught either by another player or by select smuggling teacher mobs (Try exploring shady areas smugglers are likely to be.)

Try the training droids on Coruscant (hail library on the planet, then enter the building in front of you. They are on level 2). They are a bit weaker than the droids on Lorrd/etc.

      This was helpful for me as well, as a newcomer to the mud. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>
