Why is it that we can recognize another person’s voice over comlinks but not over microphones? <!– s:( –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_sad.gif" alt="

YES. And why can we recognize what channel our comlink is tuned to if somebody’s talking normally on it, but not if it’s picking up a mic signal? Allowing us to sort out which voice is coming from which mic/at least giving us text colors…. would be every shady character’s dream.

Personally, I think being able to see persons name and or race oover commlinks is silly. Should just be tones and whether or not it’s male or female. And the only way you would know is if you know the language. IE If you are fluent in basic, GENERALLY you can tell if someone talking is a female or male. Samething for other races I’m sure that females and males sound differently, though I’m sure there are some that are indistinguishable and should be noted as such when speaking.
Seeing races and all that jazz should be left to broadcasting only.

Every few months someone suggests raping talk. I can see the realism aspect, but on the other hand, realistically you can usually tell males from females, realistically you can usually recognize the voices of people you know, realistically you can tell if someone has an accent, which would cover the species thing. The most unrealistic thing about talk is the restring thing, but it’s a pretty small issue that would take a lot of fiddling with the code to fix.
I’d rather make microphones more like talk then make talk useless like microphones.

I can see the logic in that. Gotta balance all the wonderful ‘realistic’ things that make the MUD what it is with aspects that have to be there because it is still a game.

I think that recognizing someone you’ve dubbed or greeted is logical. Race, maybe, but I’d rather not see them.
The way restring modify talk is ridiculous.
Other places I’ve played required a voice description. A wookiee could be ‘a deep throated growl’, a trandoshan a ‘a hiss of a tenor’ and so forth. Restring armor could have a vdescarmor similar to descarmor that would allow a player to tune the voice modulator. If someone’s dubbed you or you’ve greeted them, the voice description will be replaced with their name (except in the case of concealing armor).
I agree that microphones are more important, though.

The problem with this is that you can’t recognize people’s voices in person if you hear them on a comlink or vice versa because it would be "A heavily modulated voice" on talk and "A figure in durasteel armor" in person, or something similar. The problem with the way it is now is that you can recognize somebody in restrung armor based just on how they sounded on a comlink, even if you never hear them speak when you can see them. The only way I can see to fix both problems is to have them appear as "A figure in durasteel armor", sound like "A heavily modulated voice" on talk and speak like: "A figure in durasteel armor says, ‘Whatever’ in a heavily modulated voice." …But that’s a bit much. Having a conversation with somebody in a restring is already spammy. Plus it wouldn’t have their "voice" in an emote…. Ugh. It’s just way too complicated. I agree with Fishy (and all the other people who’ve said it before). It doesn’t make 100% sense realistically, but it’s good enough. Let it be.
….Back to microphones!

Hello this is a game and will never be perfectly realistic (Star wars is not realistic anyway).

I agree that seeing a person’s restring over talk is stupid. It simply doesn’t make sense. They should show up as the race/gender/greet/dub.
I see no problem with seeing a person’s gender and race. We’re not going to recode the system just to change that. It’s also logical that if you know a person’s voice, you should be able to recognize them on talk.
I also agree that microphones need to be fixed. It seems illogical to me that microphones wouldn’t work exactly like talk.
Something to think of for the next update.

I sort of like how microphones are now, you have to do some legwork to figure out who it is, where it is coming from.

How about having microphones showing just the person race and sex? Not their greet or dub, maybe the microphones distorted since it’s lower quality then a comlink or something, I don’t know.

That also makes sense.

That’s the thing though, it doesn’t require legwork. You keep track of every mic you’ve planted and make sure it’s paired with the comlink for that person. The problem is, you can only monitor one person at a time like that. It really isn’t conducive to espionage-y gameplay.
