      Hi!

So I’m working on completely revamping gather and combine (is it really a revamp if it was never implemented in the first place?) So first, gather:

No more stone/metal/wood! Yay! The components are more Star Warsy. I’ve got this half of the code up and running on Walldoport. They can be ‘gather’d from various points on a planet. Each planet has a limited amount of each resource and slowly regenerates more. So here is where things differentiate from how it was before.

The quality of your gather’d material depends on a few factors, including science level, luck, some sciences, stuff like that. The better quality stuff you mine, the faster the planet gets depleted. The better quality stuff you get from gather, the better quality stuff you can make with combine.

      COMBINE!

Right now the list of things you can make via combine is pretty limited so I am expanding it by including batteries, superconductors, ammo clips, scopes, bolts, and cooling units. I haven’t gotten too far on any of the coding on this, but the gist remains the same: you combine a bunch of materials to make a superior product. The idea is that this will be introduced at the same time of a general nerfing of pre-existing components. IE, instead of ‘go to planet X and buy this battery it is the best in the mud’ players will be able to compete and create their own batteries. Ship parts made from combine will be noticably stronger, so instead of a value of 10, a combine’d hull might be worth 50, 60, who knows? This is probably going to be a timeline-shift code implementation to make it easier to balance, but we’ll see.

Any ideas or suggestions? What other beautiful things should you be able to make via combine?

I don’t have too many words aside the obvious, "This is awesome!"

Just curious, what are the current gather-able items?
Edit: Byyyy current I mean by what’s there now versus wood/stone/metal. >_>

I like it, but it should be deterministic so that two characters with the same stats on the same world should produce the same quality goods. Also, it’d be nice if it could be coupled with developments (a lite version that doesn’t suck 100 million credits to get a breakthrough, preferably) so a clan can RP out setting up an assembly line or a factory and have a mob vendor setup that sells the finished products after enough work.

      About time.

I don’t think materials combined should have an automatic chance to produce very high quality components though. I think it should be random with a somewhat higher percentage to produce good quality components at 100%. It will give some randomness to the crafting game… which I am all for.

      Hi5 Walldo.

my only concern with the combine is how often you actually make the same quality part for a repeater. for example, if I make a scope for one rifle, and it sucks, and then make a new scope, and I am still finding a basic formula, and this scope is very high quality, I may see it as the new formula is the best, even when it is shit.

also, I like the luck being put back into weapons, though some things like ammo cells would be good to be standardized for a maximum capacity, so that good quality yields 1300, best 1500, worst 900 type of deal.

Also, does this mean scopes/cooling units will now differ in quality? I know it is in the help files that they are currently all the same just with different names, is that changing?

      If you are making everything in the game comparable by quality… then I will definitely love it <!– s:D –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /><!– s:D –>

Have there been thoughts about putting planets with better or more resources randomly out in uncharted that players can find via exploration? It would be nice if there was a reason to go out into uncharted just besides getting killed by pirates or comlink heroing.

      +1 for Zero’s idea.

They wouldn’t necessarily need be planets, but they could be asteroids and whatnot. Code in a landing sight and let the person gather from the. Also, could have a ship option similar to the resource gatherers in Homeworld. Certain mining ships could collect or gather resources with tractorbeams or some sort of similar thing, and when the asteroid is depleted, it disappears.

Either way, more stuff in unlocked and uncharted sectors is good stuff.
