It’s a pretty simple concept, items staying in a room when you drop them there. Maybe it isn’t so easy to code, or takes up a lot of memory, or something else, but I think it would be cool if an item stayed where you dropped it for an extended period of time. Things like mines suffer a lot by disappearing when the game crashes or copyovers. I can see this creating a lot of trash buildup in some high-traffic areas, but I don’t think it would be anything a few janitor mobs couldn’t handle.

Its not memory, since memory stores anything you drop, whether or not it stays over a reboot. The biggest issue is that it would likely be a big coding project.

I’d say make things like mines permanent, but everything… it’d get cluttered.

Making mines permanent wouldn’t be massively difficult, if I’m not mistaken. There’d need to be a skill — plantmine, and other skills that’d be attached to that, of course — It wouldn’t actually leave the object there, but it’d add a flag to the room. "minefield".
It’d also need an ifcheck first to find out if the room is flagged as a ship, because mines in ships make no sense.

If the muds not crashing mines in a ship makes perfect sense. Its a tactic to kill someone also if we can keep cameras in rooms why not mines? Tho I dont know how the camera thing works

The reason mines in a ship doesn’t make sense is simple:
Real landmines have to be buried and hidden to be effective. A landmine in a ship on a carpet/floor would stick out like a sore thumb, could not be buried, and therefore could not be effective.

Thats under the assumption that they’re all that specific type of mine. One could set up a trip wire mine with the actual explosive was hidden. You could set a mine so that as soon as they sit in the cockpit it explodes under the seat. You could attach it to the back of a door and when its closed/opened the pressure sets it off…There are many more types of mines than the bury type. I’m sure Star Wars ships have more than just bare rooms and controls in the cockpit heh.

You could get items to stay there if you stored everything in an SQL database, or something like that. I’m very much aware that that would be a pretty huge project though.

Would it not be easier, to, say, add a new function to area resets that deleted items only, and setting that to like, 12 hours?

If you wanted something a bit more legitimate, look at the U.S.
We don’t currently issue a true landmine, because–outside of the Bouncing Betty types, or the new Area-Denial-Munition coming out–they’re grossly inefficient. Troops do not travel in vertical columns; they travel in horizontal columns. That’s the reason for the claymore’s effectiveness: it shoots out, not up.
However, as far as LotJ goes, I think of "land mines" more like FPS C4, with some sort of trigger mechanism.
It’s the only way to reconcile being able to blow a hole in a door with a "land mine," really. There’s no way you’re doing that with a non-directed fragmentary mine, and far less chance (yes, I know less than 0 is negative) of it with a bouncing betty-esque landmine, which are what most antipersonnel mines are. MAYBE with an anti-tank round, which are almost all explosive and little fragmentation, so they can literally knock the tank up, and destroy the tread system, but still–unlikely.

I think you are interpreting the term "mine" rather literally. I think in LOTJ/SWR it’s more of "an explosive" such as a shaped charge that can be used as either a) an IED or b) for demolitions of buildings/doors/walls etc…
Since we only have grenades and explosives there really would be no other place to put conventional explosives than with mines or grenades.
