So I was talking on OOC earlier about some discrepancies I had noticed, and was getting annoyed with the general level of apathy I was receiving.
Personally I think issues like this matter, if only so everyone is on the same page when discussing such matters.

Starsystems are represented by (x, y) coordinates within the galaxy.
What is one of these units equal to?
      Why is there no Z?

Planets are represented as (X, Y, Z) coordinated within a starsystem.
What is one of these units equal to?

The hyperspace distance/duration can be used to get a reasonable idea of what the distance between actual planets is, but even that seems undefined.
What is one of these units equal to?

Personally I think the game lore has us set in far too advanced a civilization for people to be left floundering for a method to describe these distances ICly and precisely.

I think it’s more done that way for simplicity sake.

Most people just use “Sectors” because that’s what pingship says.

I’ll let other people answer the rest cause I really don’t have an answer for that.

So add on: How big is a sector?

Typically in sector distance is referred to as simply units. Ie. I am fifteen hundred units from the planet.

Measurement between sectors is just the number of sectors.

      A sector is a 100000x100000x100000 unit grid.

      Hyperspace distance is parsecs.

Yes, I was more looking for the actual distance these numbers are reflecting.
How they are being used currently is not in question.

SO a sector is a parsec then, that is something concrete at least, 3.24 light years.

      A sector isn’t a parsec.

I’m afraid you’re not going to get the answer you’re looking for, because the game doesn’t translate to real life measurements of distance very well. Hence why distance is in generic unit of “units” “sectors” and “parsecs” as opposed to light-years and kilometres.

      I don’t see why not.
It’s an advanced civilization, even if it is set in the past.
Weights and measures are the basis of economy.
Without economy, there is no civilization.
Ergo distance should be established fact.

I understand that it is not currently set in stone.
      Why not?

I was playing with math earlier, with the assumption that hyperspace is in parsecs.
The distance from Coruscant to Aldaraan would be roughly equivalent to our distance (Earth) from Galactic Central Point.
Awful big trip for one tank of fuel in a hopper.

Further project that out to the 999,-999 limit starsystem grid (according to what I heard on OOC) and the SW universe would be several times larger than the known RL universe. (Which is expanding in our present, SW future.)

Not that I have any issue with that size mind you..
Forgive me if I am overthinking things, but I enjoy being thorough.

We finally figured out a good galaxy map balance in the last timeline or two, the idea of figuring out a new method just to accomodate another coordinate does not sound super appealing to me.

Generally people just use the ‘clicks’ slang for measuring distances in sectors and parsecs between them.

I understand that it is not currently set in stone.
      Why not?

At the end of the day we are talking about a fantasy roleplaying game that is built and maintained by volunteers. We are not going to sit down and waste time making it mathmatically accurate.

I wasn’t trying to change anything.
I just wanted you guys to be definitive about what you have.
