A couple of staff members were discussing the old arena code (help arena), and I thought it was a shame that we have it working just fine but it isn’t being put to use. The Trinity Dome will be an area incorporated into Bespin as a large entertainment complex, separate from the main area. Three separate arena stages – a single-room chamber, and two as-of-now-undesigned arenas. All arena fights will be conducted with arena-only equipment purchased in the separate staging areas. Equipment will include blasters, force pikes, bowcasters, vibro-blades, smoke grenades (with a short, logical affect length), different armor pieces, various stat equipment (items will be balanced that will require players to think about what combination EQ they want), and more. ALL fights will be broadcast over holographic transmitters (help transmit).
I’m trying to think of a way for the governing clan of the planet to profit from the arena and some of the aspects of the area, but that’s still a maybe.
Questions? Ideas? Suggestions? Complaints?

I did notice last arena there were two main problems.
1) Jedi/other people who shouldn’t be there fighting. The arena list was compromised by names such as Andvari, Drask and possibly yours too.
2) Idiots using the arena as an excuse to perm people OUTSIDE of the arena. I remember one of Ford’s friends challenged some newbie in there, the newbie fought him and lost. So Ford’s friend killed him saying he had no honour.

2) I’ve already started taking steps to cut down perming in the area. People who lose fights will go to a restricted hospital room that only losers from fights go to. The place will have a functioning hospital and will all be safe.

Well, I think it is a great idea. And if you don’t want jedi and such in there.. don’t accept their challenge… Though maybe there could be other versions besides on Bespin.. like on Hapes for Hapan chars <!– s:P –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt="

roflIn other news…
I loved the arena, and I like any idea to bring it back; however, the old arena could definitely use some improvement. It would be nice to see the capability for matches larger than 1v1. Furthermore, borrowing the idea from the Romans, I think it would be cool if there were more than a couple of different terrains. Replica ships of various common classes (public, freighter, cappie?), several different biomes (jungle, mountains, urban), etc, would be cool. Also, two more things: put in goggles (I remember when the arena used to be in, this one twat of a Defel would snipe people to death while camo; it was unbeatable because the arena didn’t have goggles), and add in a bet system for those NOT involved in the arena match. The bet system for the fighters worked excellently, but having the same sort of thing (with the division of profits, and other such things that IRL sports bets have) for observers would be sweet.
As for Jedi being in the arena? More power to them. There shouldn’t be CODED SUPPORT against it. Leave it to the Jedi Council to stop them. Anakin himself was known to compete in pit races while a Padawan. Did the race organizers stop him? No, they wanted his buy-in money. Obi-Wan had to.

That is something that Rojan will have to get involved with, but I don’t see why it’s not possible.

At the moment, my current focus is on the Trinity Dome in terms of implementing arena code. I am planning on having three different arenas within the Dome of various sizes and degree. Ideally i’d like to combine your first idea (more than 2 people) with some varied terrain types.

Already have them in the vendor.

That’s actually been coded in since day one. Arena bet <fighter> <amount>

here here!
I’ve got a decent amount of work done on the Dome. The public area (including the pay-per-view system!) is set up and descripted. I’ve got most of the initial arena equipment set up and made, and one of the actual Arenas is set up for use. I’m thinking about doing a closed beta to just test out some kinks.

I knew that you were able to bet from within the arena’s stands, but will the new system support "internet betting" (for lack of a better term)–i.e. voting as you watch the "pay-per-view" version?

[/quote:1o63x5jg]As far as betting goes, will the governing clan get a percentage of the winnings and be collecting the money from the losing bets? That would be the best way for them to profit, as I see it.

I think incorperating an IC arena was a bad idea when it was first introduced. And it remains a bad idea. I vote no. People wouldn’t use it for IC things, they’d use it for OOC things. Trust me, I’ve seen arena codes in several MUDs over the years. Mostly on non-RPing MUDs and still thought it was a horrible idea. I see no reason why we should have an IC arena. Why don’t we just strip RP while we’re at it. Become a pure PK MUD?
That’s my opinion.

Because the idea is to build somewhere that people who enjoy the pvp can ease their burdens, without having to involve the RPC for restore requests. Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit, perhaps instead of running a crusade on everything that isn’t people standing in a room talking, you could input something constructive or stfu.
On the note of people talking, could betting be made available when a certain frequency is tuned to? You’d have to be at a bank terminal to place remote bets and updates on the fight could be broadcast every 5 seconds or so with information eg "John is bleeding from the guts, Bob is really pulverising him!". Just a thought, would make for good times in a casino or bar, with everyone "watching" the match.

Why do you automatically assume to know how 100% of the pbase is going to act 100% of the time? You think a well-implemented arena is only going to be used OOCly for OOC revenge or what? I’ve seen plenty of MUDs where arenas work just fine.

Betting can be done by anyone with an active comlink.

The Trinity Dome will have viewing booths where the fights are broadcast; it’s an adapted form of holotransmitters.
