I’d like it, wouldn’t you? Discuss the pros and cons and ways to make it viable!

Well, it’d be nice if we had like 10-20 engy companies producing different types of ships, but we’re often lucky to have 1 when a war is going on

I fear that adding a few models more would not make a huge difference. People still wind up using the best cargorunner, the best fighter, the best combat ship etc. We’d have those 5 popular ships and rest being useless and unwanted.

Well, that’s not necessarily true. There’s demand for all kinds of different ships.
– Travel (Fast)
– Travel (Far)
– Cargo
– Combat
– Bay room
– Cool things inside (workshops/lockers/hotels)It’s just a matter of designing them right so that no one ship gets everything. I would sell my soul for a freighter with a ton of bay room to act as a makeshift pirate carrier. Or ships like the YT-1300 with the smuggling compartment. Stuff like that.

If there were ships built around different aspects, and 5 different Engie clans to build them, I can see this working. Otherwise, it will just be as Troll said.

i like the idea of people being able to build ships, it is a new and wonderful idea in theory. The old System was pretty good to, you ask the imm for a ship and the imm makes it for you. The problem with the new ship system is that you have to develop ships, and build them. Novastar currently has what 1-2 people actively working on making ships, Mark 1, Starchaser, and Firespray. mark 1 great for cargo, starchaser great for travel. Firespray i guess for combat. But the issue is while the opportunity is there for ships to be made no one wants to roll an engineer and make ships. Maybe work out a system that could involve you order a ship at a garage, novastars garage, and it takes x long to make 1(day) and the game goes through the process of making the ship. that way more models would be available, novastar or whatever firm is currently in play gets the credits for it. (the company’s that make ships for the empire, makes ships for the rebels) I have seen it happen in the past where people don’t want to deal with the rebels, so they are stuck with far less ships than the empire. Or cargo running companies are stuck with only 1 type of ship to really use. But i think a better system needs to be in play, to get a better access to ships than what is currently available. The website says we are in era 2, i just think developing ships aside it is kinda funny that the only ships in production in era 2, are Firesprays, Starchaser’s, and mark 1. (the star destroyers i am not counting as they are not open to the public)

Reading your post man. I’m not sure you are aware of what all goes into ships in game. We have had player made ships for a long long time. I think your talking about developing ships. I have run an engineering company a few times. Its a pain in the ass trying to get what you want out of imms. Not saying imms don’t work. I also know they have to keep a balance issue. But it kinda burns you out when you list a set of problems to imms and are told to "deal with it". Yes I know imms just took time to do what ever and dont like hearing problems. But also I don’t wanna take them time to even try anymore.
As for one or two company’s. This is on the players shoulders. Imm’s don’t control this much. With formclan being turned back on its a simple process of making an engineering company and surviving a month or two.
Perhaps we could get an active pr whose job is only assisting and determining what clans need and get and giving the clan leaders FEEDBACK. Keep an open dialog with them. If you deny them something like a new ship say why.

I can think of at least one very active PR member out there, so that isn’t the problem (and yes, I think one is enough). A lot of the time, players want their hands to be held, and that, I assume, is what immortals get sick of. If you have something for them, brainstorm, make your case, probably write your ideas on notepad (preferably relate them to an IC perspective), so that when you go speak to the immortals, they aren’t feeling like you’re guessing and being wishy-washy about what you want, just to get something out of them. Cooperation is needed from both sides.

Thread is a tangent! But on the topic of getting things from the imms… They’re busy people, but if you don’t ride them to get what you’re looking for, you may never get it.
Back on topic for the ships though, I’d really like to see public prints for other models, maybe older ship designs that aren’t in play anymore.

At one point in time I would have probably said thumbs up on bringing back public blueprints. Prints being owned by a clan or two makes for more interaction in the game. Yes, there is the problem with some clans being inactive, but with public ships being available to everyone (and actual good public ships), there really isn’t an ‘omg I need a ship soooo bad, I wish public blueprints were in game’ type of emergency. At least not enough of a necessity that public blueprints would be needed.

So make the engineering facilities clan-only. That way you need to go through an engineering clan to get a ship built, but there’s the potential for more blueprints in game. Or leave things the way they are and have remote print salesmen in strange areas on the MUD.

What would be the point of having prints be public but construction pads clan only?
-
September 29, 2010 at 12:58 am #11929
The problem currently is that 1) the prints need to be developed by clans instead of seeded by imms at appropriate times and 2) clans can only have five prints or something. This fixes both of those imo. Imms can introduce new prints through events and things.

Half of the problem is that it’s a self-perpetuating problem. "Man this sucks, I can’t get a ship, there’s no engineering companies, I think I’ll start my own. Man, my engineering company sucks because we don’t have ships. We have ships, but now we have no engineers! Man, this sucks.."

Okay.. someone explain to me, preferably Avanga. Is there a shortage on ships..? Or not enough variety..? Do me a favor, if you can, and list all the ships there are in game so far. It is too early for me to try and remember them.
