Good idea/bad idea?
Say each datachip has a ‘charge’ whether 150, 200, whatever, that depends on science level, skills, feats, whatever. Each datachip then can only be studied that many times before it expires.
You could add a lvl 50/whatever science skill ‘makedatachip’ based off whatever components which also impacts quality.

people already sell datachips for like 400-500k until someone undercuts them, blah blah. people dont really use them unless they’re supplied by a clan so i could see that as a possibility for like, “clan libraries”, but for individual sale, it is kind of crazy to make this change with ‘charges’. People are opting to use quests these days despite there being datachips, or even say science leaders/other trainers, because it’s too costly.

there were sciences and things that impacted quality before but that doesn’t matter anymore with the change that the skills can’t be learned… taking away that already took away a big part of why people used them. (cyber, flurry, develop)

I think that making players the source of datachips instead of having to buy the one whatever template item, you’d drive the prices down. There might even be a natural market for lower-quality datachips; why buy a 200 charge datachip when I only need 30 etc.

additionally another bonus to datachips is you can resell it when you’re done to make SOMETHING of the credits back you earned to buy it… and as many times as you study a thing to get to say level 100, 200 charges isn’t going to be enough. So you’d have to spend… what, a million credits per class? And you can’t even re-sell them?

Oh, you mean the actual blank datachip being made. I don’t know. They’ve already been “nerfed” by not being able to learn skills, etc etc what i said already. If it’s going to go based on a blank datachip being made, i’d say make that the higher level skill and then lower theorize/hypothesize, since it seems like it’d take more to make a better blank datachip.. maybe, I don’t know. Or just make them all high level science. Then again, some people already do change the price based on things… some people are aware that people may only need X amount of levels so they make a “lesser” datachip and sell it for cheaper than a 150 skill datachip. At least I do. It’s still a RED datachip but you don’t learn as much from it after a certain level, if it’s a lower skill.

unless you mean for makedatachip to be an engineering skill, and you’re putting in components like making a blaster.. in which case, would be a huge pain in the ass. Weapon recipes are already a hard enough thing for people to figure out -.-

I like this idea. Instead of just trading around old chips, it would give teachers something to continuously do. Downside: Engineering clans which usually have the teachers already have more money than they could ever even do something with. Example? Telgorn. Semi-related example to the general point there is CSA. 90 million? Really?
Also, if they were going to be expendable, more than 200 uses would be needed. Would be a nice thing to check; from level 1-150 how many datachip study uses does it usually take? Then go a little higher than average, that way the shadier people could still sell off the old ones like they were new, make away with all the profit for a chip that only has 5 uses left. Furthermore, don’t make the datachips checkable like armor as in ‘It has this many uses left’.

I feel like a broken record, but what about progressive datachip degradation? As the state of the art in a given science advances (either through developments or just over time) what was formerly an authoritative source becomes old. It’s still useful, just not as much.

It’s a good thing Baxtalo doesn’t know that engineering clans are pretty much always running cargo to help fund developments, or else he’d look pretty silly.

Never really understood the massive hate for datachips. Most of their overpowered concepts were taken away when they could not give skill percentages anymore. Personally, if you are going to make an overhaul to datachips, take out hypothesize/theorize as science skills. Put in some kind of general skill that will allow ONLY people who are 150 in a class to make a datachip for that CLASS since skill datachips are really only class datachips anymore. Otherwise, I don’t see the point in nerfing them further.

I don’t really think this is a nerf to datachips, it’s integrating them more into the economy by giving players greater control over them. Instead of costing 300,000 or 400,000 credits a datachip, I could seeing prices being like 30,000 credits for 30 levels.

make datachips a leadership skill… It’s like a teachr writing a book, and leadership gets nothing past call.
