A thought that a friend and I had was, why can’t a high-level engineer have a closer look at an item (items that engineers can actually make, that is) and be able to find out details and quality levels of it?

We were both told, when asked about how to tell if a blaster in a shop is better than our current one, that the only way to check is to wield your blaster, then look at the store list. Yeah, that works…to an extent. What if someone sold a blaster that was only a tiny bit better than the one I currently have, and it’s on sale for a very high price. I’m going to assume that it is an awesome blaster, especially since the list says [better] next to it. When I buy it, i’m going to be sorely disappointed when I find that it is only slightly better than my cheaper blaster. Blasters are just one example. Comlinks are another small example. Cheap comlinks cannot encrypt channels, where higher quality ones can. I think engineers should be able to have a keen eye for player-created items since they themselves can make such items. They should at least understand the inner workings and potential quality of such an item. Inspect &lt;item in inventory&gt;. <!– s:) –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_smile.gif" alt=":)" title="Smile" /><!– s:) –>

I believe the requirements for being able to inspect an item should be high. You should only be able to inspect an item that you are 100% proficient at making, first of all. Maybe even throw a certain smaller Science level requirement in that item’s field of science. I realize this seems like a simple concept, but is probably very hard to implement. That’s why this is called a brainstormtorium afterall.

At the same time, a Smuggler can have the ability to appraise an item, allowing them to know what it could be sold for at a pawnshop. Not the pawn shop’s buying price, but the selling price instead. I know this particular skill could get messy, but hey, I’m throwing it out there.
