I could understand having this function back when racial bonuses weren’t given freely and people had no idea how levels were really calculated, but now that smuggling and force are the only classes that are truly random, is this necessary at all anymore? Even in the case of smuggling, people who are actually determined to get a certain level are going to create multiple characters anyhow (despite this being discourage, come on, we all know people do it.) All you’re doing it slightly inconveniencing them and making character creation confusing for newbies who aren’t really sure what kind of build would be good for them without having to discover a bunch of quests to get them those first 3 levels.
Force is obscured through other methods, but obscuring the other classes seems a little odd to me.

I think this pretty much falls under the idea of "help explore". If we were to just open it up from the start, we might as well just post all races and all class combos for people to just pick from.

Which necessarily isn’t a bad idea.
I mean look, everyone to some degree ‘god mods’ and wants the best possible levels. The higher your level, the better skills you get and the more you can RP. Personally, doing away with hiding the level maxes doesn’t sound like a half bad idea. Besides, all the class/race combos are ‘locked’ in, meaning it’s going to be the same no matter how you try to cut it.
Plus, a few people already know the min/maxes of the majority of races anyways (myself included for a number of the races). So what’s to stop me from just posting them myself?

Nothing, because the current staff is a lot more lax about it. I was the first one to crack a lot of that stuff (including the lck code), and I got threatened with a siteban by Orion for my troubles. Plus, the point of ANY game is that you DON’T know everything to start. The exploration makes it fun.I, for one, look back on the days when I didn’t know everything–before I knew the ins and outs of combat, or leveling, or piloting, or engineering, before I’d had my first forcer–and remember having a damn lot more involved fun than I do now. Then, I could wander around a planet and have fun, because it was all a giant puzzle to be solved. Now? I just want to get to the hotel/shop/whatever and back to my RP or my fight.
tl;dr = It’s not necessary, but I’m 100% behind it.

I agree, and for the same reasons you listed. If people want to work out what level set their character will get themselves then I don’t see the big deal, but I had a lot of fun trying to work things out as well.

Maybe I am missing the fun of leveling here. I’m a gamer and I enjoy gaining levels and new this and that, but so far this game hasn’t offered that for me. Other then engineering when I first started out.
I rolled humans of a certain main, get them to level 3, then compare the specific race that I want to play with to see if I will be able to get the skill levels I have in mind to RP with. It’s a pain. I wish they were just listed to I don’t have to keep making up names for newbie characters that never leave the newbie area.

Yes, it’s a pain. BUT THAT’S THE POINT. Such trickery is called metagaming for a reason: it’s NOT EASY.
You want the advantage of being able to twink out your characters to get just the levels you want, you put in the work.
Showrace is democratic enough. I had to waste hours to find out what people can get with a few showrace commands now–base levels by main, what LCK does, et al.LotJ is, at its very heart, an RPG. RPGs are games of exploration. If you don’t want that, go play chess.
And earlier, you dismissed the reasoning behind it: that it’s to stop people from rolling for levels. However, you’re dead wrong. I’ll confess that I’ve rolled for levels in the past, and the fact that I have to level to 3 to see my smuggling max is a [i:2kpb8jpr]huge[/i:2kpb8jpr] impediment–it triples or quadruples, if not more, the amount of time I have to put in per roll attempt.
