Two-for-one post! What a deal!!
I may be crazy, but does anyone else think that since an engineer can build an explosive, they should be able to use them too?
I personally think it would make sense if a master engineer could place landmines. If anyone would have the knowhow, why not an engineer who built the silly thing? If people are worried about it making engineers into some explosives specialist class.. why not lower the damage the mine does, and call it a lack of tactical knowhow on the engineer’s part?
Better yet, add a droid class that can use explosives. I know there are several droids canonically that were built specifically for remote placement or removal of dangerous explosives, so it’d be a nice thing to see.
Personally, I’d love to see droids expanded in general. The newer droid system is so much fun that I focused on it initially when I made an engineer. It may be near-impossible with our current code, but I’d LOVE to see a piloting drone that an engineer or slicer could program to fly a certain route, or perform certain space duties. Sort of a Droid Fighter concept. Maybe the drone could even be programmed to fly a cargo ship on behalf of its owner, at the risk of being unable to defend itself if someone decides to hijack the ship, or destroy the drone when it lands. In addition, to prevent people saying that’s free money, the droid could make drastically less from cargo sales than a real person. After all, a sentient being can root out better deals.
I’m sure I’ll get some hate on my ideas, but I think some of this stuff would be a lot of fun. I’d love to see droids walking around the game, doing tasks on behalf of their owners.
I also think translation droids should be given the ability to translate to a channel. It might be buggy to implement, but it’d be great for those races that don’t have the ability to speak in Basic on channel zero, which we all know is an issue for anyone that plays a Jawa, Gammorean, Wookie, etcetera. Right now, the only other way to accomplish it is by ordering a called unit to talk for you. Admittedly not too hard for most people, since Call’s level is recently reduced.

I honestly agree with more droid capabilities. When Walldo wrote up that AWESOME helpfile way back when, it gave me hope. Though, when Orion implemented the low-tech makedroid skill where-as you only get 3 classes. I think I died a little inside, not saying anything’s -wrong- with it, I was happy when it was released. But I had so much hope for it. I also think that -ALL- droids should be allowed to talk. Combat, Industry, and so on. Because the Battle Droids in 1-3 spoke, and they were mostly combat, piloting, etc. I think I know -why- it was set that way, but it doesn’t seem to matter, now.
I’d also love to have more customization with droids. Where you can set a desc, and actually adjust their programming and such outside of what it is. This is probably a pipe dream, but eh. A man can dream.
