A Guide to Legal Botting on LotJ

First, to clear up the definition of botting (in accordance with the rules and ‘HELP BOTTING‘):

Legal botting IS NOT using a client’s triggers and scripts to automate everything about your character at all times.

Legal botting IS using a client’s triggers and scripts to automate certain skills for your character while you are not paying attention to the screen (otherwise known as AFK).

Why we Bot

Some tasks and skills in the game are very time-consuming and repetitive. Some of these skills can simply be too much to stare at the screen and monitor the entire time.  Often, botting makes our lives easier by automating these skills.

How to Bot

Using a series of triggers and/or scripts, botting automates your character for especially time-consuming tasks – especially for the engineering and science-oriented characters.  Botting allows your character to accomplish these tasks while you do not pay attention to LotJ, so you can leave your client.

The command flags your character with [BOTTING], which tells the administrators and other players that although your character is doing a task, it is automated and that you (as a player) are likely not paying attention to the screen.  Once the botting session’s time has elapsed, it will automatically flag your character [AFK] and enter a ‘cooldown’ period of 30 minutes before the command can be used again.

Botting can be paused for any amount of time, and resumed later, or even canceled – canceling it begins the cooldown timer, which will reset the botting timer when elapsed.

Botting Syntax

BOT STATUS’: This command notifies you how long you have been botting, and how long you have left in your botting session (explained in Botting Rules).

BOT START’: This command either starts or resumes your botting session.

BOT STOP’: This pauses your botting session.

BOT CANCEL’: This ends your botting session and begins your cooldown period.

Botting Rules

First, you can only bot for two total hours each session, and then you have to wait 30 minutes before you can bot again.  The [BOTTING] flag does NOT act like the [AFK] flag.  Someone with a [BOTTING] flag can be attacked, grabbed, permed (in accordance with pk rules), shoved, and so forth.  Botting isn’t a reason to have any character restored.

Second, botting is only legal using the bot command, and that command is only legal with certain skills.  Those skills are: buildship, study, ponder, makearmor, develop, and research.  Only the commands associated with these skills are allowed to be automated without your attention.  Take note, it is against the rules to bot anything else, either with the [BOTTING] flag or without.  Illegally botting will be subject to severe consequences!

As a last word, it is possible to automate your entire experience on LotJ, but it is not recommended. The Immortal staff is fine with players scripting just about anything for their character when the character is not botting – AS LONG AS THE PLAYER IS MONITORING. Frequently, Immortals will check on players to determine whether or not they are illegally botting (IE, running unapproved commands with or without the BOTTING flag on). Players that do not respond will be dealt with to the fullest extent of internet law.

Emperor Offers Ceasefire, Rebel Alliance Pushes Ahead
The stark-white gear of the Galactic Empire cuts onto the screen and fades out. Your view moves to the obsidian throne room, but, instead of his usual position, the Emperor stands tall at the steps before his seat, black robes spilling out luxuriously in all directions. He pulls back his hood, revealing grey eyes bespeckled with red fleks and snow-white hair, kept long, "Good evening, citizens of my fine Galaxy. Tonight, during a brief holomeeting with disgraced senator Danneke, I offered her and her ilk room to breath: a proposal for a ceasefire. Let history remember that it is I who spoke diplomacy on this day. It was not fluff, but substantive. I demanded reparations for the lives they've taken, including for the late Grand Moff Kaiden, Dragon of the Empire. I was not planning to let them off so easy, but I -was- willing to entertain a deal. Instead of a counter-offer, the commander refused to even discuss it, intimating that I was wasting her time, and playing lame theatric ignorance regarding Kaiden's death." The man smiles, but tightly, with a furrowed disposition, before continuing, "Instead of gaining a neutral standing with me, one she and her riff-raff could have utilized in a variety of ways...tonight she decided to continue war. Let no one ever forget it." The Emperor gestures forward with gloved hands, "She now leads beings to a gruesome death, and she will follow them in time. When that day comes, perhaps then she will realize the folly in her mistake tonight. Either way, my Empire marches on."

Drolek's Militia Formally Declares Rebellion
The screen crackles to life and the image of Danneke Luxia standing against a stark-white backdrop is displayed. Stained upon the backdrop, a color as red as fresh blood, is a unique starbird symbol representing a phoenix. The woman steps forward and begins to speak, "Good evening Galaxy. The time has come to bring new hope to the galaxy. From the ashes of a fallen Republic, from the explosive demise of Mon Calamari Shipyards, from the collective cry of those who won't be downtrodden by an illegal Empire any longer, and from the unfortunate loss of our dear leader Orwen Drolek, comes an alliance of like-minded factions. We refuse your totalitarian leadership. We refuse your ravaging of our natural rights. We refuse to bend to your will. We refuse to pay for another permit. We refuse to be discriminated against because of the race of our people. We rise now, The Rebel Alliance, a promise to bring an end to tyranny." As she speaks, the camera pans out, eventually wide enough to display a large, growing crowd of soldiers, pilots, agents, and diplomats. "United we cannot be defeated. Every day that a citizen says Enough! is a day that we grow stronger. Join us to bring an end to this Galactic Empire."

Recent Changes

Let's Work on the Sodium Level
We have noticed a recent trend over the past few months and years in which sodium levels have been rising massively - both across the pbase and the staff. We want to take some time to address this as best we can, and to plea with everyone. As time marches on, we have to take a few things into consideration: We have a pool of around 200 players that have been playing a 20-year-old game (which endlessly cycles the same 3 base stories every 9 months) for 5-10+ years. Some of you are new, and some of you have held grudges against the same player for 15 years for reasons that neither of you can remember. Most players want to log in and RP without worrying about cheating, powergaming, or toxic behavior, and most staff want to spend time creating or helping to craft a story for everyone without dealing with the above - or having to revive or restart the story when a player or clan gets that overzealous "gotta win!" mentality before the story can take root. Many of us - players and staff - are in our 30's now, and the general feeling is that we straight out just don't want to waste time on not-fun bullshit. Activity levels are dropping across the board because "the story is stagnant", "the game isn't fun", "the staff is biased", or "my opponent is too try-hard". None of these things are beneficial for anyone, and complaining about them in DMs to each other does nothing to change perception or reality, and instead breeds a self-feeding cycle of hatred. Keeping this in mind, we'd also like to ask for everyone to just take a step back and "woosah". Clamp down on that immediate urge to shit-talk someone. Maybe don't spew your OOC frustration as a clever, rule-lawyered, saying In Character. Instead of complaining about what staff is or is not doing in DMs, bring it to us via email so that we can all examine it and chat about it. Think about what is happening in the state of the game before your character makes a move that could tear down a new enemy in its cradle. Consider that this is a roleplay game, and that there are roleplay components and gameplay components - both of which need to be balanced. Part of that balance comes from examining a situation and determining what might be good for the game/story overall, rather than just "what would my character do". Wrapping up, we want to make this the game of choice that people want to spend their off-life hours returning to, rather than just a server in which many struggle to log into and a place to rehash old grudges. If you have any issues that are troubling you, reach out to us at [email protected] - not immchat. Whether it's a complaint about the story, a player, or even staff, we want to know about it - and we all want to have eyes on it. Above all, consider that if we want a chance of salvaging things and returning to the good times we all cling to, then we need to begin to be more considerate of each other and of the storyline as a whole. Take some time to work with us in closing out grievances. Talk to old players that you've had issues with in the past and see what you can work out. Let's brush the IC and OOC salt off the table and move forward.

1728 Welcome your new RPC!
