How our Storyline works!

by Xerakon

This guide was written with the purpose of granting a new player some insight into LotJ’s unique storyline/timeline system.

As Legends of the Jedi is an RP-enforced MUD, it contains a cyclical storyline for us to enjoy. A storyline (commonly known as a TIMELINE) is comprised of three parts, each known as an ERA. Each era contains a separate and significant part of the timeline and typically revolve around a major governmental shift and/or conflict between two factions. If we were looking at the official Star Wars story as a timeline, the following comparison could be made of our eras:

Era 1:  Old Republic versus rise of the Empire

Era 2:  Galactic Empire versus a scrappy Rebel Alliance

Era 3:  New Republic/Resistance versus a reformed Empire-type/Other outsider antagonist

Are all timelines like this? Are we always following “The Canon”?

No. Many of our timelines follow this example, but no two have ever been the same. In the past, we have had Mandalorians, Argazdans, Hapans, Chiss, Hutt Cartels, outsider threats, insider threats, criminal clans, and many more opponents that have risen to defeat the predominant clan of each era. We strive to create new stories each timeline that are different, interesting, malleable, and enjoyable. The above screenshot depicts a spin on the canon First Order that did not go according to plan due to player involvement!

So… Who decides what happens throughout a timeline?

The short answer is that a combination of Immortal planning and player interaction determines what happens. LotJ is unique in the sense that although the Immortals may plan for how a timeline begins, or how each era should progress, the players are ultimately the ones that are “living” the story out. Timeline stories and era events shift due to the decisions that influential characters and organizations make. Even the least-known character can change the galaxy, if they plan or handle it correctly.

How long is a timeline? Are there player wipes between each one?

There are no set time constraints on timelines or eras, but an era is generally between 6-9 months, making timelines somewhere in the ballpark of two years. You will have a good amount of time to either enjoy or to affect change within a storyline! Characters are not deleted or wiped until a timeline change occurs. However, sometimes the Immortals will wipe player shops, message boards, and player homes between eras to assist the galaxy from becoming cluttered by the remnants of inactive or bugged characters.

How do I know what era we’re in?

The login Message of the Day will tell you what era we are currently in, as well as a summary of events that got us there. If you are having trouble finding it, you can enter ‘HELP MOTD‘. Most players on the OOC channel can also answer this question for you – they just cannot go in-depth!

Where can I find information on the history of current storyline?

By reading the news, of course! Entering the command ‘NEWS ALL’ will show you all of the news articles of the major events that have occurred during this timeline – Beware, it is long! You can read each article with ‘NEWS #’. This is the best method to quickly catch up on the events that have occurred thus far. For more in-depth information, you can always use IC communications (covered in another guide) for current information.

When will this era/timeline end?

We hold End of Era (EoE) and End of Timeline (EoT) events to mark the significant changes within the mud. These can be major battles or large RP events that your character can take place in. EoE and EoT events are typically known via a ‘CHANGES’ announcement, in which the staff will also ask the playerbase to submit applications for new characters, positions, or clans for the next era or timeline. This allows the entire playerbase an opportunity to take place as influential change agents as the story progresses into its next phase.

Now that you know how our unique storyline works and progresses, put that knowledge to use and enjoy the current story that Legends of the Jedi is offering! Please visit the other guides on LotJ’s website for more assistance in getting started.

Queen Unphased by Propaganda Attempt
An image of the planet Naboo appears, overlaid by the Crown. As an elegant female voice begins, it dissolves into the Queen's features, "Our hearts go out to Seanna of Lorrd and we commend her as one who has been thrust into duty, for doing her best to care for the needs of the People of Lorrd." Pausing, she looks straight into the holo-cam as a countenance of concern washes over her visage. "The Kinetic Fleet was large enough to patrol the entirety of the Kanz Sector, and Naboo had no defensive measures to speak of. We deemed that a single vessel could be dismantled and studied, in order to potentially produce similar defense systems for -all- in need. Alas, in the wanton destruction visited upon us by the bombardment of the droid H4-L0 any chance of this was lost." A moment passes as she reflects over that horrible event. With an air of sympathy, she continues, "We represent the peoples of Naboo and understand very well the position of Lorrd, surrounded by Morgukai fleets and Battle droids. We share joy with you that your grimaces have turned to smiles, but as we see with eyes unclouded by smoke trails left behind by vulture droids, we see the Empire's attempt at propaganda for what it is." With that, a polite smile graces her features and the Queen's image fades from view.

Morgukai Call upon Seanna of Lorrd to Set the Record Straight
The emblem of the Morgukai appears suddenly on the view screen. A line beneath appears it in dark red, the sounds of war droids marching clangs loudly. Two more lines connecting to the bottom appear, forming a triangle around the emblem, and it begins to glow brightly before cutting out entirely, revealing the infamous droid, H4-L0 flanked by two red-skinned women, a Twi'lek and a Togruta. "Propaganda," the droid states to a crowd of humans in Capital City during the early evening, "is for the weak of mind, and all that the Queen of Naboo knows how to serve." The crowd goes wild, cheering loudly for a few moments and fading as the droid lifts an open palm. "Today we celebrate the combined efforts of the Lorrdian people and the Morgukai ingenuity. We cede the floor now, and welcome Seanna of Lorrd, the Acquisitions Officer who first came to us to request assistance in returning the Kinetic Fleet to those that it belongs to, the People of Lorrd." The now uncomfortably famous Lorrdian steps forward from behind the stage, the crowd cheering again. Seanna covers her face with her hand a moment, playfully hiding the embarassment from all of the attention. After a few moments she speaks, "Not long ago, word of the Kinetic Fleet went from legend to reality, and gave Lorrdians the spark of hope that we needed. I reached out to the Morgukai, not as a leader of Lorrdians, but as a citizen who loves my people and knew they could, and would, help us." She takes a quick breath, acclimating to all of the attention on her before she continues, "And despite the efforts of the Queen of Naboo's attempt to steal the Kinetic Fleet from the citizens it was designed to protect, the Morgukai came through for us, and for that, we remain eternally grateful." The crowd cheers again and a wing of Vulture-Class droids come screaming past, far above the crowd, trailing stripes of red and black colored vapor.

Cyborg, Cyborg Man! I Want to be! A Cyborg Maaaan!
I know its the craze of the day right now. Due to IC events, being a Cyborg is the desire of many meat bags. Unfortuantely, in order to do that currently requires us to make a new race for each individual race that wants to be one. While we would LOVE to make anyone/everyone a cyborg, right now it is not feasible. Having said that, we're attempting to fix that so it would only require a small flag as opposed to an entire race change. We'll keep you all posted when it is able. Thanks!

Mud is back up! Thank you for your patience
Thanks for bearing with us over the downtime and shout out to Rojan for hopping on to help me with a reboot script issue. TLDR: The mud blew up (it happens) and corrupted vships.are in the process, which prevent us from coming back online. The reboot script got a little crazy, and wouldn't even let us get to the point where the mud would run into the vships problem. Rojan fixed the script, I fixed the area file, and here we all are. I had to restore a backup of vships (where we store all ship rooms etc) but it was only from 2-3 hours before the crash.
