I always thought a great idea for a mud would be a zombie theme based on all our favorite horror films of old (Dawn/day of the dead, Night of the living dead etc).
You know the drill, the dead are getting back up and roaming the earth. Unfortunately coding and building is one of those things that happen to other people as I lack the intelligence, know how and time to learn and do it myself. The beauty of this theme is that no-one (me) is going to mind if you were to shamelessly rip off the films in fact the more rip offs and stereotypes the better! The possibilities and locations are infinite and you can take the end of era concept (28 days, weeks, months even years later) but instead of wiping characters export them (like I say I have no clue about creating a mud and how easy/impossible this would be to do.) so you have your initial outbreak which would be say 72 hours to a week with your soul objection being survival. *If* you made it you would then move on to the next era (think 28 days later) where attempts to control the outbreak have failed and you are holed up somewhere with other survivors maybe in the local mall or an army base out of town somewhere (‘real original Mike’) maybe you joined a gang/clan of bikers or rednecks? Next era lets say 28 weeks later (that film looked bloody awful so I haven’t actually seen it myself) you’ve lasted this long so you must be doing something right. Maybe the revolution is being ‘reality’ televised and you’re a minor celebrity zombie hunter trying to make a bit of a name for him/herself amongst the underground survivors and bookies?

As for classes they could be defined by a characters occupation. Perhaps combat classes such as a soldier or police careers with opportunities for sub classing such as a combat medic or war veteran gun store owner for military sub classes and the Leon Kennedy first day on the beat cop or a Bogart style washed up has-been private dick who never looses a fight. Maybe a judo instructor with high unarmed and grappling skills? I had an idea for a ‘signature weapon bonus’ with some class/sub classes e.g a desert eagle for you Leon fans or a snub nosed 38 for Bogart. Again anything goes with civilian classes, a Firefighter wielding an axe with high endurance and moderate wisdom (door is hot = fire), or a milkman with high charisma. A criminally minded character can pick the lock of that abandoned house instead of just sticking his foot through it causing a lot of unwanted attention. Maybe your a hacker whose skills come into play more in the later era’s when you’re trying to uncover the origins of the plague and find out just how deep said rabbit hole goes. Vehicles would be an awesome touch e.g you see a car 1) Can you get in it? 2) you got keys to start it or you going to have to hot wire it? 3) Will the bloody thing start? Here a mechanic class might be able to find out why it wont start and if its fixable opposed to say a hairdresser who would only be able to determine if it will or wont start. A driving instructor or racing driver would have bonuses when driving a car kinda like the pilot class, hell what zombie film would be complete without a whirly bird in it somewhere? You could even play as a homeless person the benefits being you know the maze of city streets and alleys like the back of your hand.

As for food and drink etc, although this would add a huge element of realism to the game especially a survival themed one personally I hate the concept nothing worse when your in the middle of a hard days idling than being told every 10 minutes your going to die unless you find yet another source of food or clean water *sigh*. But on the other hand as I say this would add an element of realism to the game. Another fun concept would be barricading the entrances to keep the horde out, have you missed a window somewhere? Maybe you were a muppet and left the kitchen light on alerting your presence to everyone friend or foe, perhaps you deliberately left the 8th floor lights on as a signal to others? If your bitten by a zombie do you become one of them giving your character 2 lives in a sense?

You still here? Maybe there are far too many possibilities to condense into a text based mud I know I haven’t written half my ideas down and already I’m probably boring you. I have started working on a set of rules for a pen and paper style game but I am a lazy man and it will probably never be finished and likely to end up filed on an abandoned hard drive somewhere in a folder marked ‘nice try’ or ‘wishful thinking’ then hundreds of years from now people of the future will find it, decipher it, and treat it as religious text worshiping the all mighty D100 <!– s:P –><img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_razz.gif" alt=":P" title="Razz" /><!– s:P –>. It’s just an idea I had a long time ago and I decided to write it up here as I have lots of time to kill waiting for LoTJ to return. Thanks for taking 5 minutes to read it and my apologies for any piss poor grammar and spelling (no-one knows how to murder perfectly good literature with an ill placed comma like I do).

Ah, I wasn’t here 3 weeks ago, and haven’t noticed your thread in the 48 hours that I have been here. Apologies if I just re-hashed everything you guys have already discussed. Can you give me a link to it?

There should be an international font for sarcasm, unless you genuinely mean you didn’t have this idea 3 weeks ago? I was inspired for this about 5 years back when I played a tabletop game based on day of the triffids. But like I say I’m a lazy man and lack the means and ways to make something out of it. If your making or planning on making a zombie mud, I’d be honoured to help out with ideas and inspiration but I’m sure like me you got thousands of them already.

Are the zombies mobs or players?

If they weren’t mobs, there wouldn’t be enough.
      Mobs are dumb.
