New Player Information
THIS PAGE IS A WORK IN PROGRESS!
Brand new to mudding? This guide has been developed to help you get connected to LotJ.
Step One: Getting a client
First, you will need a client to use to view Legends of the Jedi. These clients are generally free or free to try.
- Mushclient - Mushclient has been free for many years now and has many of the features MUDers love, including support for aliases, triggers and timers. Scripts can be written in Javascript, LUA, PHP and more.
- Portal - Portal comes with a thirty day trial. After that, registration costs $20. Portal possesses alias and trigger support, includes a built-in mapper, graphical status bars, and many other unique features.
- CMUD/ZMUD - ZMUD and its successor CMUD is a robust MU* client. Like Portal, it comes with a free trial and can be purchased for $30.
- GMUD - GMUD is a bare bones client that is good for those who are not familiar with more intimate features like scripting or don't need them. GMUD is free.
NOTE: The images shown in this tutorial use the "GMUD" client but the steps are very similiar to all the clients listed here.
Step Two: Connecting
Open a new connection window.
The Enter Connection Information window pops up with blank entries. Fill in the Host and Port as pictured above, and click “Accept” when you have done this. (Portal trigger ‘elcome’ is correct.)
Host: legendsofthejedi.com
Port: 5656
Click connect!
NOTE: The recommended font for playing LotJ is 'Courier New'. Some things may not appear in proper formatting with the GMUD default font.
SUCCESS! You are now connected to Legends of the Jedi. Enter the name of the character that you wanted to play. If the name has already been used in our galaxy, then you will be prompted to use another name.
Questions show up one at a time, and are displayed in the example above with answers in place. Provide your answers in the typing buffer at the bottom of your screen, and they will be inserted on the screen, as displayed above.
You will be asked to agree to LotJ's Legal Disclaimer, which can be read in its entirety on the forums.
The MUD will ask you several questions about your character, including its gender and race. You will be provided with a long list of races to choose from.
Not all races will be available at the outset of your time here. LotJ features a unique account system through which you can obtain points that can be used to
unlock new races. As of May 2009, the following races are free and thus available to you as a new player:
Human, Twi'lek, Mon_Calamari, Bothan, Duros, Zabrak, Muun, Besalisk, Cerean, Neimoidian, Omwati, Quermian, Vurk, Wroonian, Pau'an, Utai and Gran. |
After selecting your race, you will be shown a list of level modifiers and asked to confirm your race selection. Each race has a unique set of positive and negative
modifiers for each class that affect the maximum level you can obtain in that class.
The next screen will ask you to assign 20 points among the six stats we have on LotJ. Strength is your character's physical prowress. Intelligence is your mental
prowress. Wisdom is your ability to incorporate learning. Dexterity is your agility. Constitution is your physical stamina. Charisma is your physical beauty and charm.
Do not worry if you do not max out a statistic, they can be trained later on in the game.
Tell us a little about who you are playing! This information is considered to be the absolute minimum to be accepted for RP. Fill in the information as you are asked,
and type DONE when you are finished. If you made a mistake along the way, just type NO at the end of the questioning, and you will be given the opportunity to
reenter the data. This information can be seen by other players, and it is considered to be ‘in character’ data. Later on, you will need to create a more thought out history.
Select a hair color and skin color for your character by typing in the number assigned to the hair color option, followed by typing done after each selection.
Select a prompt. Your options are at the top of the example, listed as #1, #2, or #3. Prompts can be changed and customized to your liking later on.
You will then be asked a few questions about your client configurations.
This is the newbie Message of the Day (MOTD). The motd number changes from time to time and must be entered in before your character can log in.
This ensures the staff that players have had the opportunity to read the mud announcements.
When you play LotJ, your character is always in a room. This room is composed entirely of text, and connects to other rooms that you can navigate your character through.
Virtual Rooms broken down; Going from left to right, and down, here is an explanation of how the mud room works.
The red box at the top tells you what room you’re in.
The green box lists flags that enable your character to do special things in that room. The hotel flag enables you to safely log out, and the bank flag enables
you to manage bank accounts that you may set up for your character. Other flags to look for are “Library” where you can study your skills, and "Workshop” where you can build engineering goods.
The grey box lists obvious exits. There may still be hidden exits that are not listed! In the example above, you can go in one direction only, north.
The yellow box is LotJ's OOC channel. Players use this channel to shoot the breeze and talk about things not directly related to the in-game world.
If the channel gets too busy for you, you can type "chan -ooc" to turn it off. "chan +ooc" re-enables it.
The blue box is one of the mud's main in-character channels, TALK. Nearly every character in the galaxy tunes in to CommNet 0. If the channel
gets too busy for you, you can type "chan -talk" to turn it off. "chan +talk" re-enables it.
