Ok, the buildship command, as we have it right now, makes no sense. I’m not talking about the actual process of an engineer building up the frame into a finished ship – that’s a topic for another thread. But there are issues with the way the frame is first placed down.
The way we currently have it is this. Some engineer – probably the leader of an engy clan – grabs a blueprint, goes to a garage, types ‘buildship,’ and makes a frame. However many hours later, when the frame is a completed ship, it’s owned by whatever engineer originally made the frame.
That’s all great, as long as we want individual engineers to be building their own ships. But that’s not the way it works. Clans build ships. But when the ship is finished, it’s not owned by the clan that built it; it’s owned by the engineer that made the frame. Which creates a needless hassle where the engineer has to trade the ship to the clan. Granted, usually the engineer in question is the clanleader anyway, but it can still lead to problems. What if the leader takes a day off, and the clan needs to sell a certain ship on that day? What if the leader gets permed/quits? What if, after the old leader gets permed/quits, the new leader happens to be somebody who can’t build ships?
Solution. Add a new command – call it, say, clanbuildship. A clanned engineer puts down a frame. If and when the ship is finished, it’s owned by whatever clan the engineer was in when he put down the frame. It’s a simple thing, but it would go a long way towards fixing the little internal hassles in engy clans that force everyone to wait way too long for their ships.
Of course, it’s entirely possible that this already exists, and I haven’t seen it.
